For my research into genre and audience, I looked through chapters 4 and 15 of the BFI statistical Yearbook 2014 and made some notes.
Chapter 4 - Genre
The 3 most successful genres at the UK box office were Animation, Action and Comedy. The 3 least popular genres at the UK box office were romance, documentary and war.
The film genre that had the most films released in 2013 - 14 was comedy, but it wasn't the most successful. There were 153 comedy films made in 2013-14. There was also 33 animated films and 47 action films made.
Chapter 15 - Audiences
The age group which made up the largest proportion of cinema admissions in the UK was 15-25. The comedy film that was most successful with this age group Hangover Part III. The film most popular with the over 50's was Quartet which was a comedy/drama film.
The genre most popular with men was action films and the genre most popular with women was Biopics. UK films appealed most to audience type aged 45-55.
The 3 most popular films with ages 7-14 were One Direction, Wreck it Ralph and Despicable Me. This tells us that their preferred genre is Animation.
The 3 most popular films most popular with the 35-44 age group were Frozen, The Croods and Jack and the Giant Slayer. This may be because this age group were taking their young children to watch these films.
The 3 films most popular with the 25-34 age group were DJango, Fast and Furious and Rush.
